Pope John Paul II has asked the world to open up to Cuba and Cuba to open up to the world. All legitimate reasons for a travel ban on Cuba ended when the top U.S. general for the Southern Command announced (April 1, 1998) that Cuba was no threat to anyone. The Supreme Court ruled in the Wald v Regan case that the only way that the U.S. government could control the travel of U.S. citizens during peace time was if there was a "national emergency". They made a one time exception because the U.S. said Cuba would use tourist dollars for Cuban adventurism. No "national emergency" and no "Cuban adventurism" means no reason for travel sanctions. Wouldn't this be a great time for American bill fishermen to ban together and use this tournament as a reason to end all travel sanctions to Cuba, just as American ping pong players did to open the doors to China?

One has to get a permit from the US Coast Guard that will allow you to leave US waters.  That is simple and usually takes only about one day.  The Marina Hemingway Yacht Club will give you a letter saying that you have been "hosted" by another person.  This way you do not spend any money while you are in Cuba. Upon return, most boats re-enter the United States at a point where there is no US Customs or Immigration.  Call us for the details on how this works!  I would suggest that all travelers to Cuba go to our main website  www.cubatravelusa.com  Then click on  More Information Cuba Info button at the top.  The first item appearing on that page is called  "Travel Tips".  Follow those suggestions perfectly and you won't have any problems with US Customs & Immigration.  If you were to happen to be caught, we tell you how to handle it yourself or give you the name of the lawyers at both the Center for Constitutional Rights and the National Lawyers Guild.  There is good help available.....anyone following our instructions never gets in any trouble. We even offer sample letters that you can use.   It has worked for everyone for the past five years who used them.
